I honestly don’t know how I got anywhere before the GPS was invented. I can’t find my way out of a cardboard box. Back in the day, I couldn’t read a map and remember getting directions like – take a left turn by Bob’s house, then turn right at the Shell Station, keep going until you come to a country store, then turn right…. You get the picture.
My first GPS was a Tom Tom. Remember those? I was going on a trip to Atlanta and my husband set it to MOO every time I went over the speed limit. I didn’t know how to adjust it so wasn’t a very pleasant trip because apparently, I go over the speed limit a lot.
Do you have trouble making decisions? We make gazillions of them every day. I don’t believe we have to overthink whether to have Corn Flakes or Life Cereal for breakfast. But we do have bigger decisions that impact the direction that are lives will take where we should definitely seek God’s direction.
Have you ever wished for a GPS to tell you where to turn at each juncture when you are making these difficult decisions? Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. However, there is a GPS (God’s Prompting Spirit) that can help guide us. Inner prompting from the Holy Spirit will always be in line with God’s will for us and is critical to making the right decisions. How does this work? Unfortunately, it’s not as clear as a GPS telling us what to do but I know that I often feel a nudge in a direction and have a feeling of peace when I think about making that choice. I believe this is coming from the Holy Spirit.
Here are three additional tips to discern God’s will in your decision-making process:
- Consult His Word
If a path is not consistent with His word, you are going the wrong way! If you are thinking about cheating on your spouse, you don’t have to dig very far to find that answer. But if it is something less clear, you may need to do a little research.
- Pray
Ask God for his guidance and direction. Be cautious not to confuse God’s voice with your feelings and desires as we have a tendency to do that at times.
- Seek the counsel of Christian friends
Approach some trusted friends and ask for their insight and guidance.
