I have been on this hot mess journey for more than 5 years now and am feeling that it’s time to step back. Not that I’m cured, I’m still at least lukewarm but better!
The Journey
When I started, I had the perfect storm in my life (or probably more imperfect). I was a relatively new empty nester and trying to find my purpose in this new chapter of life. I was working in a toxic work environment. My older daughter was struggling with some physical and mental health issues. My stepfather passed away and my mom was very depressed. I started feeling led to write and share my struggles to help others with theirs. Most people on social media share the positive aspects of their lives – their genius children, their fabulous vacations, etc. Whereas I was feeling led to be vulnerable and share my challenges. I didn’t know how to really start so began a blog which developed into two books –
Confessions of a Hot Mess: From Mess to MESSage
From Hot Mess to God’s Best: Decluttering Your Mess to Be Your Best
My second book was pretty disappointing as my publisher required me to purchase A LOT of books, many of which are still in my garage. It’s been a little over a year now, and I’m kind of over it. I have been praying about next steps for my little ministry and it seems like hot mess has kind of run its course.
What’s Next?
In the meantime, over the last few years, I have lost my mom to suicide and have been dealing with the aftermath of that. And a year ago, I started a HR Consulting business, InfluenceHR Consulting through which I help small and medium-sized businesses retain, engage and develop their talent, while ensuring compliance. It has gone pretty well so far but exhausting. Initially, before I went into it full-time, the plan was to focus on working with faith-based organizations and churches. Although that hasn’t worked out, I feel like there might be an opportunity to marry the two somehow. From my experiences, the workplace needs some Jesus!
I may be crazy but have written another book in a totally different genre – 7 Habits of High-Retention Managers – that I am self-publishing. I am planning to keep low-key, primarily using for speaking engagements, to give to clients and potential clients, and to pair with a course that I have by the same name.
In addition, tomorrow evening, I am going to start some training that will hopefully allow me to work with people that have experienced the death of a loved one to suicide.

I am not planning to continue my blog and may eventually shut down my website. I hope that you will continue to follow my Hot Mess page on Facebook.
If you are in the workplace, you can follow my business here or on LinkedIn.
