Controlling the Need to Control

Does anyone else like the feeling of being in control? I’m having trouble controlling my need to control. I know I need to let go and let God, but, for some reason, it’s very hard for me. I love to have my plans and feel like I have control of how things will go. It’s too bad that others are not following my plan because their lives – and mine – would be so much better!

In what areas of your life do you struggle with controlling your need to control? For me, it is relinquishing the need to control my young adult children. For some reason, they are not following my plan for their lives. Shocking I know! They are on the cusp of making so many decisions that will impact their lives long-term – what career to choose, how they take care of their health, who to have a relationship with or marry to name a few – and they rarely listen to me anymore. I also know that I’m way too concerned about appearances and need to let it go but rainbow hair, nose piercings, and Birkenstocks with socks and sweatpants were not a part of my plan.

Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

I have finally come to realize that I’m rarely, if ever, in control of what happens. The Scripture above is a reminder that it’s all God. I may have control over my actions, attitude, and responses but that’s about it. Even knowing this, when something happens that concerns me, I still get in there and try to set things straight. I guess this means that I secretly still think that I’m in control and don’t trust God to handle it. However, this is an area where I’m moving from hot mess to progress!

Below are three things that you can do to help you let go and let God:

#1 – Surrender to God

We have to confess and surrender our need to control. God asks us to trust him with what we can’t see. One suggestion to help with surrender is to write down on little pieces of paper the areas of your life where you want to relinquish control. Then lay the pieces of paper on the floor and image they are at the feet of our Father.

#2 – Meditate on truths about him

Meditating on truths about God can help in the quest to relinquish control. Reading your Bible and recording verses that remind you of his love and support can be helpful.

#3 – Don’t doubt

God knows what you need and when you need it. Trust Him to take care of things for you. When I am having doubts about his plan vs. my plan, I often think back to times when He helped me though difficulties. This helps me to remember that He works all things together for good. (Romans 8:28)

Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hands, I commit my spirit, redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth.
