Accepting Outer Appearance

Getting kind of slack this week with my post as a quote from someone else makes up most of it. I also just spoke about the subject on my “podcast” or what might be one someday. Anyhow, I wanted to write about the importance that many of us place on outer appearance. As the backstory, I had a headshot done last week and got the pictures back. I have never been very photogenic, but they made me feel old and unattractive. I’m sure it was a photographer problem though, maybe a camera malfunction (LOL). I guess I don’t really notice all my wrinkles on a daily basis – but apparently, I squint a lot. I also am encountering some other older lady issues like age spots, eye bags, occasional chin hairs, and my eyebrows are going away. What’s up with the eyebrow thing anyway?

One of the chapters in my book is called Mirror Mirror on the Wall and the subject is how our appearance can become an obsession or idol. Society puts such a huge emphasis on how we look on the outside that it’s hard for us not to focus on it – but God looks at our heart, not how we look on the outside. (1 Samuel 16:7)

I found this quote below, and it spoke to me so thought I’d share it.

Don’t prioritize your looks my friend, as they won’t last the journey.
Your sense of humor though, will only get better with age.
Your intuition will grow and expand like a majestic cloak of wisdom.
Your ability to choose your battles, will be fine-tuned to perfection.
Your capacity for stillness, for living in the moment, will blossom.
Your desire to live each and every moment will transcend all other wants.
Your instinct for knowing what (and who) is worth your time, will grow and flourish like ivy on a castle wall.
Don’t prioritize your looks my friend,
they will change forevermore, that pursuit is one of much sadness and disappointment.
Prioritize the uniqueness that make you you, and the invisible magnet that draws in other like-minded souls to dance in your orbit.
These are the things which will only get better.
